This painting on canvas is the fourth of four paintings which the first time should try to tell a coherent story. Of the four paintings only this one and the first one is still existing, because I destroyed the paintings II and III. These paintings were so drastic as far as a view on human life is concerned that they were not reasonable for the viewer.

While the first of the four paintings is influenced from sadness, this painting seems to be a very catholic one. The child had been told beliefs of guilt and punishment, of the purgatory and the hell and this left deep traces to it.
